 ABOUT DMS
The Danish Microbiological Society (DMS) is a professional association in the fields of human and veterinary medical microbiology, general microbiology, food microbiology, environmental microbiology, biotechnology, and virology.
DMS is dedicated to the advancement of microbiology, both applied and basic, and promotes microbiological information to the public. These aims are achieved by organizing an annual symposium, workshops, conferences, and by taking part in the current microbiological debate. Furthermore, DMS supports students with grants for travelling: applications for the DKK 2500 grant can be submitted each year before April 1st and October 1st.
Shouldn't you take part in the advancement of microbiology in Denmark, and become a member of DMS? As a member, you are entitled to discounts at FEMS meetings and for FEMS journals (Federation of European Microbiological Societies).
 ABOUT the Symposium This DMS symposium is a Danish national meeting in which all scientists working in the fields covered by the DMS have a chance to exchange ideas and catch up on the latest developments in their areas of expertise. Besides the oral and poster presentations, the meeting will give scientists the possibility in a technical exhibition of getting acquainted with the newest laboratory equipment and consumables presented by the suppliers.
Keynote address:
The Microbiome of Long Term Human Space Missions, J.L. Garland, Kennedy Space Center, Florida, USA
Extended human missions in space, particularly involving exploration beyond near-Earth orbit, require a fundamentally different view of microbiology. Rather than sterilizing and isolating materials and people to minimize “contamination,” microbial communities will need to be effectively incorporated and maintained. The dynamics in the diverse microflora directly associated with humans, and associated effects on human health, are just beginning to be understood, and the impacts of isolation and space conditions (particularly ionizing radiation) are poorly understood. Just as on Earth, microorganisms will play a key role in sustainably providing environmental life support within the system, including water purification, nutrient regeneration for plant systems, and potential energy and material production. Innovative, small-scale biological systems are unique, sustainable attributes, and their application in spaceflight offers a model for decentralized systems on Earth. While various conceptual and empirical approaches for incorporating microorganisms into life support systems for space have been evaluated (and will be reviewed), the long term stability of integrated systems have not been established. The direct dependence of human health on the complex microbiome within the closed systems challenges our ability to construct and maintain microbial communities. Advanced monitoring tools may be useful, but conceptual frameworks of microbial communities as complex adaptive systems are even more important for effective management.

VENUE
The symposium will take place at the historical harbor pack house Eigtveds Pakhus, on Nov. 7th, 2011. Eigtveds Pakhus is the official meeting facilities for the Foreign Ministry of Denmark and was originally built in 1748-50. Since 1976 the pack house has served as a premium meeting venue on the harbor front in central Copenhagen, a few minutes' walk from metro station Christianshavn.
POSTERS
Posters are welcome from all areas of microbiology. Posters (portrait size: H:150cm W: 95cm) will be displayed all day, and presenters are asked to be present at their posters from 13:30 to 14:00. Eighteen posters will be selected for a short platform presentation.
ABSTRACTS
Abstracts should be submitted through the DMS homepage www.dmselskab.dk before October 3, 2011. All abstracts will be printed in the abstract book, which will be handed out during registration and can be downloaded from the DMS homepage.
PAYMENT (and student stipends)
The fee for attendance at the Symposium is DKK 600 (EUR 80). This includes lunch and coffee breaks during the day. Members of the society pay a discounted fee of DKK 400. Membership for all of 2011 can be obtained at the same time as registration for DKK 200. Please see details for payment on the homepage. Coffee, lunch and reception are included in the registration fee.
Fifty stipends are available for Master students who present a poster and are student members of DMS. This gives free access to the symposium including the lunch, coffee, and reception. The application for stipends can be found at www.dmselskab.dk and should be submitted by October 3rd.
